Before starting the migration of your workstation to Windows 11, we recommend that you follow the following procedure, and check the items defined below:

MigrationDescription
Hardware compatibilityMake sure your PC meets the minimum requirements for Windows 11, such as processor, RAM memory, storage, and TPM 2.0 compatibility.
Applications and driversCheck that your applications and drivers are compatible with Windows 11. Some software may require updates
Data backup Before starting the migration, back up all your important data to avoid any loss in the event of a problem.
Storage spaceMake sure you have enough free space on your hard disk to install Windows 11.
Internet connection A stable Internet connection is required to download installation files and updates.

Once these elements have been verified, you’re ready to start your Windows 11 migration; the Migration steps are defined below.

Compatibility of your PC with Windows 11

Microsoft has set up several tools to help you determine whether your computer can be upgraded to Windows 11. These tools check whether your hardware meets the minimum requirements for a smooth experience with the new operating system.

To do this, download the PC Health Check software by clicking on the following link: https://aka.ms/GetPCHealthCheckApp

Then follow the instructions for downloading and installing the software.

The minimum requirements for Windows 11 are as follows:

MigrationDescription
Processor 1 GHz or faster with at least 2 cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or SoC.
RAM 4 GB or more.
Storage 64 GB or more.
System firmware UEFI, Secure Boot compatible.
TPM Version 2.0
Graphics cardDirectX 12 or later compatible with WDDM 2.0 driver.
Screen >9″ with HD resolution (720p).
Internet connectionAn Internet connection is required for updates and to download and enjoy certain features.

Business applications

To ensure that your applications run smoothly, make sure they are compatible with Windows 11.

You may need to contact your supplier or partner who makes your application available to you.

The recommended option is to perform the upgrade on a test PC that has all the business software and is as close as possible to the production environment, before embarking on the upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 across your entire IT estate.

ApplicationsDescription
List applicationsIdentify all the business applications used by your organization.
Consult software publishersCheck with publishers or their websites for Windows 11 compatibility.
Analyze dependenciesCheck whether your applications depend on other software or specific components that may not be compatible with Windows 11.
Test compatibility Use test environments to run your applications under Windows 11 and check that they work properly.

Driver updates before and after the upgrade

Before upgrading, make sure you have installed the latest drivers for your hardware. Outdated drivers may cause compatibility problems.

Important: Even if your PC meets the minimum requirements, some Windows 11 features may not be fully supported. We always recommend consulting your manufacturer’s documentation for model-specific information.

Before upgradingDescription
Windows Update Go to Settings > Update Security Windows Update. Click on Check for updates and install all available updates, including driver updates.
Device managerExpand each device category, right-click on the device you wish to update, then select Update driver, and choose Automatically search for updated software driver.
Drivers Drivers For critical components such as graphics cards, chipsets and network peripherals, download the latest drivers directly from the manufacturer’s website (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, etc.).

Following the upgrade, be sure to double-check and if necessary update the latest hardware drivers, as these may have changed now that your OS is different.

After the upgradeDescription
Windows Update Go to Settings > Update Security Windows Update. Click on Check for updates and install all available updates, including driver updates.
Optional updatesSettings Windows Update Advanced options Optional updates.
Drivers Drivers If some components do not work properly, uninstall the driver and install the latest manufacturer’s driver.

Backing up your data

To back up your data before migrating from Windows 10 to Windows 11, here are the steps to follow:

BackupDescription
Identify the data to be backed upImportant documents: Work files, reports, etc.
Photos and videos: Personal memories, work items.
Music and media: Audio files, playlists.

Backup mediaExternal hard drive: Connect an external hard drive and copy your important files onto it.
USB stick: For smaller volumes of data, a USB stick may suffice.
Cloud storage: Use services such as OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox to back up your files online.
Backup and restoration Check integrity: Make sure all important files have been backed up correctly.Test restoration: If possible, test the restoration of a few files to make sure everything is working properly.

Storage space

To migrate to Windows 11, it’s essential to make sure your PC has enough storage space. Here are the key points to consider:

Minimum storage requirements

  • 64 GB storage space: Windows 11 requires at least 64 GB of free space on your hard disk or SSD. This ensures that the operating system and future updates can be installed without a hitch.

Recommended space

  • Clean installation: A clean installation of Windows 11 can take up around 27 GB of space. However, it is recommended to have more free space for updates and additional applications.
  • Extra space: Microsoft recommends extra space for updates and specific features.
Storage spaceDescription
Free up spaceDelete temporary files: Settings > System > Storage and click on Temporary files to delete unnecessary files.Uninstall unused applications: Settings > Applications > Applications and featuresUsethe disk cleaning tool

Internet connection

To migrate to Windows 11, a stable, fast Internet connection is essential.
